Checklist

Introduction and familiarisation

As a supervisor you have an important role to play in the student's international work placement, he/she is new and not familiar with the company. Your role is to introduce the student and to familiarise him or her with the job. You will have an induction meeting with the student and introduce him/her to your organisation. This may contain the following:

  • What will happen on the first day.
  • How to become familiar with the company, the supervisor and colleagues.
  • Introduction of the goals and the work of the company.
  • What form the International work placement will take - training plans and purpose.

About two weeks after the induction you can have the first supervision meeting with the student. During this meeting you can plan ahead according to the demands and needs of the student's course and those of the company.

For this item two sample practical assignments have been developed.

Placement support material has been developed that can help you as a company to make this work placement a success for the student and your business. The material is available in several European languages and focuses on the care and business sector.

Supervision

You will supervise the student during his international work placement and adapt your supervision to the individual student's learning style and level of knowledge. By having these supervision meetings on a regular basis you can supervise the development of the learning process and make the placement as effective, efficient and pleasant as possible, for all concerned. You should aim for the following structure when arranging supervision meetings:

  • Preparation
  • The actual meeting
  • The report

Assessment

Assessment is an important stage in the coaching of the student. Assessment in Vocational Educational terms is used to determine whether the student has reached all the educational goals and is able to perform at the required level.
During the assessment meeting the mentor and the trainee discuss the performance of the student during a certain period of time and the expected future performance.
